This is extremely common and usually happens because they were forced to memorize flashcards without building visual number sense first. Homework assignments change every week, but core concepts do not. When a student understands why an algebraic equation or scientific law works, they can solve any problem put in front of them on test day—not just the ones on tonight's worksheet.

This is something we see often. A student may be able to follow an example while the teacher is working through it, but still have trouble starting a similar problem on their own. Usually that means the steps are more familiar than the concept itself. We work on helping students understand why the math works so they can use it when the problem looks different.
